Subj: continue to fight VTA's proposed service cuts
From: [email protected] (Eugene Bradley)

The Santa Clara VTA Riders Union (SCVTARU) urges you to continue fighting VTA's proposed service cuts.

In case you have not heard, VTA wants to reduce or eliminiate service on 65 of 72 bus lines, as well as light rail. In the case of light rail, VTA wants to cut service off between 2:00am and 4:30am. More details on what VTA wants to cut can be found at http://www.vta.org/news/2003_proposed.html#service_reductions

SCVTARU will hold its next meeting this Wednesday (January 8) at the San Jose Fire Training Center, 255 W. Montgomery St. in San Jose. Half an hour after our meeting ends, the VTA will hold what is known as a "CEQA" (California Environmental Quality Act) meeting at the same site. By state law, VTA must hold this public meeting, where questions asked by the public must be answered by VTA in writing within 30 days.

SCVTARU will also hold a rally to protest VTA's proposed service cuts this Thursday at 5:30pm in front of the County Government offices at 70 W. Hedding Street in San Jose (near Civic Center LRT station, and VTA bus lines 36, 62, 66, and 180). More information on the rally is available at www.vtaridersunion.org. You are strongly encouraged to bring protest signs to the rally.

If you or someone you know uses VTA buses or light rail, you need to make your views known to the VTA's Board of Directors. Pat Dando and Forrest Williams, who serve on the San Jose City Council and represent South San Jose, sit on the VTA Board and will vote on the proposed service cuts. Contact them at their offices at (408)277-5251 and (408)277-4282 respectively.
