Subj: Bicycle run on Santa Teresa 6/18/2000
From: [email protected] (Russ A. Carr)

The manner in which Santa Teresa Blvd. was blockaded for the bike riders in the morning of June 18th made prisoners of folks living between Santa Teresa and the hills, from Kahalin to down past Bernal. We were prohibited from crossing Santa Teresa to go to church on this Father's Day Sunday. We live out by the foothill end of Snell. We went down to Snell and were forced by the police to turn right at the high school, towards Cottle. All the minor side streets on the right were blocked off with police barriers. At Cottle, an officer informed us that the blockage went on for over 3 miles, past Bernal. We went right on Camino Verde and traversed the back streets to Kahalin and attempted to cross. Santa Teresa there, only to be forced to turn right again, back towards Snell and Cottle. As there is no way out of the neighborhoods between Santa Teresa and the hills at the Kahalin end, the only escape would have been to go all the way down to Bailey and cross over to Monterey to come back up on the Blossom Hill side of Santa Teresa. This is the second year of this unannounced event making virtual prisoners of this fairly good sized area of homes. This is unconscionable and should not be allowed to happen ever again. Such events belong in parks or places where residents have a forewarning and a reasonable circumvention. The geography of the Santa Teresa area is NOT appropriate for this type of activity. If I had the e-mail address for Mayor Gonzales and Council Member Powers I would send this to them.

Hi Russ. You can reach the mayor via email at [email protected], Charlotte Powers at [email protected] and Patricia Dando at [email protected]. [SAS]
