Over the past two years we've done a front yard re-landscape (the persistent frosts this winter haven't helped!), master bath update, kitchen remodel, some window/door replacements, and interior/exterior painting (next week).

One thing I would recommend is to use a designer FIRST to get a good set of specs for the work you want. Then get estimates from builders, which, given the specs, should yield apples-and-apples comparisons. Designers are good at designing; builders are good at building. The incremental cost difference for using a designer is small compared to the total project. Find out if a designer has a "relationship" with a certain contractor(s). That can be good, but it also introduces potential conflicts of interest. I would highly recommend the following people on the basis of quality work, good scheduling, and competitive pricing:

On the less satisfied end of the scale, MAM Industries did our bathroom update. We had them do the bathroom as a "test case" for the kitchen remodel. While we're pleased with the end result, I felt like I had to project manage the job, and for that reason did not invite a bid from them on the kitchen.
