Subj: Position of Mayor Gonzales on power plant? From: [email protected] (Walter Alvey) The article that I referred to in my previous posting did not speculate about Mayor Gonzales' position on the power plant. However, I found something that may be relevant to that question. In Janet Gray Hayes' statement that she was withdrawing her endorsement of Ron Gonzales for mayor, she said: "As Mayor of San Jose, I always believed our first priority should be protecting the quality of our neighborhoods and the environment. ... I originally endorsed Ron Gonzales for Mayor because I believed he shared these same priorities. However, as the issues have been discussed in this campaign, I have come to question his commitment to our San Jose neighborhoods and the environment." (The entire statement is at http://www.slip.net/~advisor/prhayes.htm.) Two of the major arguments against the power plant are the effect on our neighborhood and the environment. Those facts, combined with statements made by Mayor Gonzales' budget and policy director (see http://www.amcity.com/sanjose/stories/1999/07/26/focus1.html) lead me to think Mayor Gonzales will come out in favor of the plant.
