Subj: New topic for Feedback Discussion: 24-hr Fitness at old Lucky site
From: [email protected] (Scott Martin)

I've just read the Santa Teresa Citizen Action Group Update (7/29), and I'm extremely disappointed that we're going to see yet another health/fitness club open up. We've already got the new Gold's Gym on Bernal, and there's a Schoeber's (http://schoebersclubs.com/schoeberssanjose/) located off Bernal. It's a shame that Duckett-Wilson is unable to find a tenant that the community actually wants in this location.

I appreciate the fact that major renovation work is being proposed as a result of this new anchor, but since we were hoping that another grocery tenant would be found, this news is somewhat bittersweet. I also found the statement "It is possible that the Round Table pizza will expand to use the now-vacant Wolf Camera space" rather interesting -- has there been any indication by the owner that he wants to expand? Or is this comment an optimistic throwaway line to encourage neighborhood buy-in for what's going on in the center?

With Wolf relocated to the Bernal location, I've got even more reason to shop at the other stores at the Bernal Center. Wolf's new location offers more on-site services than before, and it's only a matter of time before more of my $$$ are headed that way. And here's one that I bet you haven't heard: One McDonald employee stated to me that they plan on closing the Plaza de Santa Teresa location. Does this make sense? I don't think so, but how many other "Health" and "Fitness" clubs have a fast food restaurant nearly adjacent to them?

I look forward to seeing Tom Wilson's design plans for the center.

Let's get some feedback going on this topic.

- Scott

Just to clarify, I don't believe anyone from Santa Teresa Citizen Action Group had anything to do with the selection or solicitation of the new prospective tenant 24 Hour Fitness. In the past, STCAG had only tried to get the center cleaned up and attempted to secure grocery services for the shopping center. I personally have heard that the owner of Round Table Pizza had wanted to expand into the Wolf Camera site, but I haven't seen any indication of that happening as yet. Hopefully, Duckett-Wilson will have more answers in the near future. I have also heard that McDonald's plans to leave, but haven't verified that either and didn't want to report rumors. It doesn't make sense for McDonald's to leave as I have only heard of one other McDonald's to ever abandon a site. [SAS]
