Subj: Early discussions between Calpine and City of San Jose? From: [email protected] (Walter Alvey) One thing I have been wondering recently is what discussions took place between Calpine and the City of San Jose before this power plant was announced to the public. I say this for two reasons: 1. When the plant was first announced (around February 1999 as I recall), it was clear that Calpine had already done a lot of planning for it. 2. In the article "Keeping Coyote Valley Green" (http://www.amcity.com/sanjose/stories/1999/07/26/focus1.html), Kent Edens, deputy director of the city of San Jose's Planning, Building and Code Enforcement Department said, "Calpine chose one of the few places we'd even consider, up against Tulare Hill. This is probably the least offensive visual location, and it also fits in well with the plan to extend the Santa Clara Valley Water District's South Bay Water Recycling project for using reclaimed waste water." Is that just a coincidence? If such discussions took place, I would be curious what promises (if any) Calpine and City officials made to each other. Also, statements such as the above do not give me a warm feeling that city officials are truly "undecided" on this issue (as they have suggested as some of the meetings that I have been to).
