Subj: Proposed Calpine Power Plant From: [email protected] Dear Neighbors, As you probably know, the Santa Teresa Citizen Action Group, an association of neighbors and concerned citizens, has been in the forefront of the effort to encourage Calpine to be a responsible member of our business community and find an appropriate (non-residential) location for the proposed power plant. There are two governing bodies whose approval will be required for the proposed power plant to be built at this location, the San Jose City Council, and the California Energy Commission. Your input to these two bodies will alert them to your concerns. Please take the time to write a letter to our District 2 Councilmember, Charlotte Powers. As she is charged with the responsibility of representing us, it is up to you to let her know how you feel. A sample letter is available; better yet, write your own. If you choose to email or phone, please consider following up with a hard copy. I believe a paper letter will have more impact than email or a phone call. Each Councilmember will have a vote on this proposed action; six Councilmembers defending our neighborhood is all it will take to defeat this proposal. Send them all copies to let them know how you feel. Councilmember Charlotte Powers cc: Mayor Ron Gonzalez County Supervisor Don Gage Commissioner Robert Laurie State Assemblyman Jim Cunneen State Senator Byron Sher Governor Gray Davis US Representative Tom Campbell US Senator Dianne Feinstein US Senator Barbara Boxer If you fax or email your letter, please follow up with a hard copy to EVERY Councilmember and the Mayor; all at the City Hall address above. Please also send copies to as many of the various other legislators who represent us as you wish. Although they are not directly involved on this situation, they may be interested to know the concerns of the neighborhood. Again, I don't believe that phone/fax/email contacts are logged as thoroughly as a paper letter. Please print this out and share with your neighbors, particularly those without internet access, or print out a sample letter for them to sign and mail in. Also, petitions are available for download that you can circulate and mail back to Santa Teresa Citizen Action Group (address on petition). Calpine has stated that they are very serious about building this power plant at this location. They are not required to be concerned with the neighbors opinions. If you don't oppose this power plant, it will very likely be approved. Don't assume others are voicing your concerns or making good decisions on your behalf. YOU must participate. Let's try to get these letters going within the next week. There will not be a vote on this issue; this is your way to express your opinion. Thank you for your willingness to be involved in protecting and defending our beautiful neighborhood. Elizabeth Cord |
